When we play eight notes in a stepwise sequence such as above, this is called a scale . Scales are a great way to train your eyes, fingers, and ears to read, play, and hear notes accurately. The specific scale above is a form of an “F” scale (F Lydian scale for you theory buffs), named appropriately because it begins and ends on “F”. The more practical and commonly used “F” scale requires an alteration to one of the notes. These alterations come in the form of flats and sharps that will be studied in the next section.
